Welcome to Puppy Preschool: Essential Information Before You Begin

To make the most of your experience, here’s what you need to know before starting.

Preparing for Puppy Preschool Class: Expanded Guide

  1. Notebook & Pen: Bring these to jot down important points from the class. Taking notes ensures you can review training methods at home and stay consistent.
  2. Questions: Consider your puppy’s specific behaviors and bring any concerns you have. The trainer can offer personalized advice or solutions during class.
  3. Week 1: Orientation (No Puppies)
The first week is dedicated to owner education. This gives you the opportunity to learn about critical training techniques like crate training, toilet training, and how to understand dog body language without the distraction of your puppy. You’ll also be introduced to important commands like ‘sit’ using luring techniques.
  4. Training Tools: Have the essentials ready for a smooth class:
    • Flat Collar and Harness (Optional): Ensure it fits securely and comfortably to keep your puppy safe and under control.
    • Leash: A standard leash, (No retractable leashes), for better control during training.
    • Mat or Bed: This gives your puppy a designated spot to rest and reduces distractions in class.
    • High-Value Treats: Small, soft treats (eg. cheese, high quality dog rolls, roast chicken pieces) to keep your puppy motivated and excited to learn new commands.
  5. Consistency: Ensure that the main caregiver attends every class. Consistency between the trainer, caregiver, and other family members is essential for your puppy to learn effectively. Keep everyone on the same page by sharing notes and techniques with family members who aren’t attending.
  6. Health & Well-being: Make sure your puppy’s vaccinations and parasite treatments are up to date. This helps protect both your puppy and the others in class.
  7. Feeding Before Class: Avoid giving your puppy a large meal before class. Training is most effective when your puppy is food-motivated, and treats will be a key part of the lesson.
  8. Positive Mindset: Puppy preschool isn’t just about the puppies—it’s also about you! Keep an open mind and remember that this experience is a learning opportunity for you to understand and bond with your puppy.
